Tricks and tips to get the perfect rental home experience:

Sticking to your spending plan:

  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Booking your vacation home in Fall or Spring months is one of our best tips for saving money on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your family qualifies for a special rate.
  • Booking websites usually offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Hilton Head area magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines contain discounts for nearby shops and restaurants.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Begin by choosing trip dates and a spending budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration your group requires. Spacious Oceanfront Villa with 4th Floor Ocean Views! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, contact the host before you book your home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Some properties allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the property management company about pets before booking.
  • Visiting for a specific event or attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental.

Know before you go:

  • Be sure you get the host's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, intercom or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents many concerns.
  • Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let crooks ruin your vacation.
  • To ensure that damages aren't linked to your visit, make note of any problem areas upon check in. Contact the property manager immediately to document any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Be respectful. Frequently, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can often help. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • On check-out day, take a walk-through to confirm you haven't forget anything. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and look for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager is not available, ensure that you take photographs of the property to record its condition.
  • Did you have a great time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
