Our top Vacation rental tips:

Finding your perfect vacation home:

  • Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is high season in Hilton Head. Book your vacation in Fall or Spring to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your family qualifies for a discount.
  • Property managers often offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Hilton Head visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guide magazines contain money saving offers on local shops and restaurants.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Choose your dates and budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration your group needs. Calming Condo Getaway with Shared Pool, Hot Tub, and Tennis Courts has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is normally available online. If not, reach out to the property owner before booking the vacation property. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, but some don't. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the host about your furry family members before booking.
  • Looking for particular amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Save the directions to your phone, and take a printed copy.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your vacation home while you're out and about. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Make a record of any damages to the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be useful if there is a dispute.
  • Be respectful. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings at departure. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, ensure that you take video of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a fantastic stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property management company was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
