Rental home tips:

Money saving strategies:

  • In the Hilton Head area, The earlier you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable properties are reserved very early. Booking your rental home 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of SC. Book your rental home in Spring or Fall to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your family qualifies for a discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local Hilton Head visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides have deals for local tours and attractions.

Choosing the best vacation rental in the Hilton Head area:

  • Choose vacation week and spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Third floor Penthouse with wonderful ocean views! - *Pool heated seasonally* has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts is almost always accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, reach out to the property management company before booking the vacation home. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • If your family is bringing pets, you must book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Is your group looking for unique amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.

Additional considerations:

  • Add the host's contact info to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents a lot of difficulties.
  • Lock your vacation home while you are out and about. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • To ensure that damages aren't attributed to your family's stay, inspect for any problem areas when you arrive. E-mail the property manager right away to document any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers disrupting your quiet neighborhood. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Re-check every room of the property to confirm that you've packed all personal items at check-out. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the property one final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, remember to take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Property managers rely on great reviews to inspire future reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
