Tips and Tricks to get the best Hilton Head vacation home experience:
Getting the most from your budget:
- The sooner you can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The most desirable properties are booked very early. Booking your rental home up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Hilton Head area. Book your Hilton Head vacation home in the Spring or Fall to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
- Property managers usually offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Many management companies supply Hilton Head area visitors guide magazines which include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local companies, or through a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Make a plan and pick the bestrental:
- Select a group leader, choose your vacation dates, and choose a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration you need. Large Three Bedroom Villa Directly on George Fazio Championship Golf Course! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available online. Otherwise, contact the host before you book the home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or costs may be applied to your agreement.
- If there's an individual Hilton Head attraction you crave, keep an eye out for homes that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.
Some things to know before you go:
- Be sure you get the property manager's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent a lot of concerns.
- Lock your rental property while you are away! Don't let thieves spoil your vacation.
- Record any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be beneficial if damages are assessed.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can usually help. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Re-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at departure. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Please make sure to walk through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition.
- Leave a review! Property managers rely on good reviews to stimulate more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to fix it.
