Tips and Tricks for getting the perfect vacation rental experience:

Sticking to a rental budget:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are high season in Hilton Head. To book the largest rental home within your budget, we highly recommend reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at Hilton Head restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hilton Head area visitors guide magazines which include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

How to pick the perfect vacation home in the Hilton Head area:

  • Start by selecting trip dates and a max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your group requires. 2 bedroom 2 bath townhouse overlooks the George Fazio golf course! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email or call the host before reserving the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what is suitable for your vacation.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but some don't. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
  • Is your group looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking

More considerations:

  • Add the host's contact information to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent many concerns.
  • Keep your rental home locked while you're out! Don't let crooks ruin your trip.
  • At Check-in, note any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Re-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed all personal items at check-out. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your family have a terrific stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
