Our top Hilton Head vacation rental tips:

Get the best value:

  • Summertime is high season in Hilton Head. Reserve your Hilton Head rental in the Spring or Fall to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your family qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property management companies typically offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Hilton Head visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines have discounts for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Selecting the perfect vacation home:

  • Start by having your group commit to a vacation week and a budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. Three bedroom Shipyard villa has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hilton Head rental home search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email or call the host before booking the rental. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds.
  • Are you visiting for a specific attraction? Use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional pet fees or charges applied to your invoice.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Take a copy of the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property. Store the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • At Check-in, note any issues with the property and immediately alert the owner. Record all coorespondence.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would at home.
  • Re-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Leave feedback! Hosts rely on great feedback to inspire future bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
