Tips to get the best vacation home experience:

Money saving strategies:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is the most expensive season in the Hilton Head area. Booking your vacation home in Spring or Fall is a great way to save on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your vacationing group qualifies for a discount.
  • Property management companies usually offer their guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
  • Find a copy of your local Hilton Head visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guides contain discounts for nearby tours and attractions.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Start by having your family decide on the best dates and a spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Dunes Villas D2
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, contact the host before you book your rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to establish what configuration is optimal for your vacation group.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but some don't. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the property management company about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
  • Is your family looking for unique amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking

During your stay:

  • Be sure you get the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone.
  • Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your rental while you're out. Protect your property!
  • Document any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a great resource to find the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • At departure, complete a final walk-through to make sure you didn't leave anything behind. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property a final time and scan for any damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Leave feedback! Hosts rely on great reviews to drive more bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your feedback find their best vacation rental. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
