Our top Hilton Head vacation rental tips and tricks:

Money saving strategies:

  • Summertime is the most expensive season along the coast of SC. Reserving a rental home in the Spring or Fall is a great way to save on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable homes. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Booking websites frequently offer customers an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Hilton Head area magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guide magazines contain deals for nearby shops and restaurants.

Planning, picking, and booking a perfect Hilton Head rental:

  • First and foremost, have your family decide on dates and a spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. 1st floor condo with balcony, pools, tennis & close to beach has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, call the property manager before booking the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches. You will need to establish what is suitable for your group.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable pet guidelines before booking.

More considerations:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
  • Note any damages to the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if a dispute is filed.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are away, just like you would at home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the property to confirm you've collected everything. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property owners rely on great reviews to compel new bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will appreciate that you share your review find their best vacation rental. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
