Tips to get the very best vacation property experience:

Get the most from your rental budget:

  • Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Hilton Head area. To book the best vacation home within budget, we suggest booking in the Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at restaurants, beaches, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your family qualifies for a discount.
  • Property management companies often offer customers an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Many management companies supply Hilton Head area visitors guides which often include special offers, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Select a group lead, select your vacation week, and choose a maximum budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Old-Fashioned Beach House with Huge Screened Porch - Steps from the Beach has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hilton Head rentals search.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed types is regularly available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email the host before booking your rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, filter your search for a pet-friendly property. Make sure to ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Often, property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Visiting for a single event or attraction? Use a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.

During your stay:

  • Add the property manager's contact info to your phone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, intercom or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents lots of issues.
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are out, just like you would back home.
  • Record any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be valuable if there is a dispute.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to make sure you have not leave anything behind. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on great reviews to stimulate future reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
