Booking the best Hilton Head rental experience:
How to get the best rental value:
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- To get the most suitable rental home within your budget, we strongly suggest booking in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at popular Hilton Head attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Some property managers offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your group.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Look for your local Hilton Head area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guide magazines contain money saving offers on local tours, shops, and attractions.
Make a plan and pick the best Hilton Head vacation home:
- First, have your family agree to a vacation week and a budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Beautifully renovated villa with stunning views! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible online. If not, reach out to the property owner before reserving your rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches. You'll need to work out what bed configuration is right for your trip.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you'll need to find a property that allows animals. Request specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Often, hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
- Is your family looking for special amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
Additional considerations:
- Be sure you get the host's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
- Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Lock your vacation home while you are out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- Document any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be beneficial if damages are assessed.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- On check-out day, complete a walk-through to confirm you didn't forget any personal items. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your group have a terrific time? Most rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property management company was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
