Booking the best vacation rental experience:

When to book a Hilton Head rental & When to go:

  • The sooner your group can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved early. Booking your rental home six to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
  • June, July, and August are high season in the Hilton Head area. To get the best value, consider shifting your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer warm temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local Hilton Head visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guide magazines have deals for local shops and restaurants.

Planning and choosing yourvacation home:

  • Start by selecting potential vacation weeks and a maximum budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Ideally located condo with pool, tennis court, bikes, balcony, deck, W\/D & AC has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available online. Otherwise, email or call the host before you book the rental. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to establish what configuration is optimal for your group.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, but some don't. Allowable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask your host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
  • If there's a certain Hilton Head attraction you are enamored with, look for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

Advice for a terrific stay:

  • Put the owner's information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, stereo or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents a lot of problems.
  • Lock your rental while you are away. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Make a record of any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be valuable if a dispute arises.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a terrific source for finding the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Re-check the vacation property to make sure that you've packed everything at departure. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a terrific stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
