Tips to get the optimal Hilton Head vacation rental experience:
Find your perfect rental home:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of SC. Reserve your vacation home in Spring or Fall to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property managers usually offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
- Look for your local Hilton Head area magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines contain money saving offers on local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
How to choose the perfect vacation home:
- Start by selecting your potential vacation weeks and a budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Renovated condo on the beach with pool, balcony, central AC, W\/D, & fitness room has 3 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hilton Head rentals search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available online. If not, reach out to the property owner before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches.
- If there's a certain Hilton Head attraction you are crazy about, look for properties that are either near by, or those that cater to your needs.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental
- Some rentals allow pets, and some do not. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property management company about pet restrictions before booking.
During your stay:
- Be sure you get the owner's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. Put the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- To make certain that no damages are linked to your visit, record any problem areas during check in. Speak to the rental manager immediately to document your findings. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be useful.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Be respectful. Often, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are away, just like you would at home.
- Re-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a fantastic stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
