Strategies to get the perfect rental experience:
Getting the best rental value:
- Summertime is high season in Hilton Head. Booking a rental in Fall or Spring months is a good way to save on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Property management companies usually offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides contain discounts for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
How to select the best vacation rental:
- Start by having your family select trip dates and a max budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Luxurious 5th floor One of a Kind Oceanfront Penthouse! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is generally available online. If they are not listed, contact the property owner before reserving the vacation home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to determine what is right for your group.
- Visiting for a single attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.
- Some properties allow pets, but others don't. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the owner about your furry family members before booking.
Additional considerations:
- Be sure you get the host's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- To make certain that damages are not attributed to your family's visit, make note of any problem areas during check in. message the property manager immediately to report your findings. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Be respectful. Often, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Re-check every room of the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items at check-out. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property one final time and look for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Leave feedback! Hosts rely on good reviews to stimulate future reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationers will will be grateful for your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
