Tips and Tricks to get the best Hilton Head vacation home experience:

Getting the most from your spending budget:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Book your rental property in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Some hosts offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Property management companies typically offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Many rental management companies supply Hilton Head area travel guides which will include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or through a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Select a group lead, select your vacation week, and select a spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Large Three Bedroom and Three Bathroom Villa Close to the Pool! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property management company before booking your home. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You will need to work out what bed configuration is best for your vacation family.
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you will need a pet-friendly vacation rental. Get information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some property owners charge additional pet fees.
  • Looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

Know before you go:

  • Take a copy of the owner's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents lots of difficulties.
  • Lock your rental home while you're out and about. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Record any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a wonderful time? Many rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
