Tips for getting the perfect rental experience:
When to go & When to book:
- To find the best value, change your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warmer weather, , and greatly reduced traffic.
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your group.
- Booking websites often offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Hilton Head area magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines contain offers and deals for nearby tours and attractions.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Start by choosing your trip dates and a max budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Beautiful villa, family-friendly w\/ balcony, beach access, pool, & washer\/dryer has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible online. If not, reach out to the property manager before booking your home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches. You'll need to work out what configuration is suitable for your trip.
- Are you visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking.
- Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or might be applied to your invoice.
Know before you go:
- Store the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Make a record of any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if a dispute arises.
- Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Respect your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Lock your rental property while you're away! Don't let thieves spoil your vacation.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected everything. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did you have a wonderful vacation? Many rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
