Tips to get the best vacation property experience:
Sticking to your spending plan:
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are high season in the Hilton Head area. To get the most suitable vacation home within budget, we suggest booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Booking websites frequently offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guide magazines have discounts for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- Start by having your group commit to the best dates and a spending budget.
- Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Stunningly remodeled 3rd floor villa with ocean views has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly accessible online. If they are not listed, contact the property management company before booking the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to establish what bed configuration is best for your family.
- Some rental properties allow pets, but others don't. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the property management company about your furry family members before booking.
- Are you visiting for a specific attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
More considerations:
- We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone.
- Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are away, just like you would at home.
- Make a record of any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if a dispute is filed.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to make sure you have not leave anything behind. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, ensure that you take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
- Did you have a excellent time? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property management company was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
