Tips and Tricks to get the best Hilton Head vacation rental experience:
Sticking to a budget:
- Summertime is the most expensive season along the coast of SC. To book the largest rental home within budget, we suggest booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite Hilton Head restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Property management companies often offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hilton Head area visitors guide magazines that include special offers, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Planning and picking your Hilton Head rental home:
- Begin by selecting your trip dates and a max budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Lovely townhome with balcony, tennis & W\/D - steps to golf & beach trolley has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available on booking websites. If not, call the property owner before you reserve the home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Are you looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental.
- Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or costs may be applied to your contract.
During your stay:
- Get the property manager's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your . We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Document any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are very helpful if damages are assessed.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, intercom or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents quite a few issues.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors bothering your home life. Use the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected all personal belongings. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, take photographs of the property to record its condition.
- Did your family have a fantastic stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
