Booking the best vacation rental experience:
Find your best deal:
- Summer months are the most expensive season along the coast of SC. Book your rental property in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- The earlier your group can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved very early. Reserving your vacation rental 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your family qualifies for a special rate.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Often, property management companies supply Hilton Head area visitor guide magazines that include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or through a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Narrow your Search:
- Start by choosing your trip dates and a budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration your group requires. Homey Condo with Lagoon View from Balcony - Hot Tub, Pool, & Beach Access has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the host before booking the property. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to determine what bed configuration is right for your trip.
- Visiting for a single attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. .
- If your family is traveling with pets, search for a pet-friendly property. Get details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Note that some property managers charge additional pet fees.
Additional considerations:
- Add the owner's contact information to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Record any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are valuable if damages are assessed.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Lock your rental home while you are out. Protect the owner's property and your things!
- Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, remember to take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a fantastic vacation? Most rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
