Rental home booking tips and tricks:
When to go & When to reserve a Hilton Head rental home:
- The earlier your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are booked very early. Booking your rental up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your vacation rental.
- To book the largest vacation home within your budget, we strongly suggest booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at popular attractions and restaurants.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
- Booking websites typically offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Many management companies supply Hilton Head area travel guides that include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Start by choosing your the best vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Beautifully remodeled villa w\/ WiFi, inviting porch & balconies - walk to beach has 2 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is often available online. Otherwise, email the property management company before you book the rental. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to work out what is optimal for your vacation group.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or costs could be applied to your agreement.
- Visiting for a specific attraction? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .
Have a great stay:
- Add the owner's phone number to your smartphone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Note any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if there is a dispute.
- Respect your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- When it's time to leave, complete a walk-through to confirm you did not forget any personal items. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the host is not available, remember to take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your group have a terrific stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
